Welcome to the Vic Wave sailing series for 2011 - 2012 season! After the winter break it’s time to get back out there in the waves again. This year we again have a mix of ‘roaming’ and ‘fixed’ dates on the calendar to maximize our chance of scoring some fun wave sailing conditions to suit all levels of wave sailing. The idea behind the roaming dates is that an event can be called ‘ON’ at the last minute based on a good forecast. The system for calling an event ON will start on the Thursday an email & SMS will be sent out to inform everyone that we are watching a forecast and hoping for a weekend event. A confirmation email & SMS will then be sent out on the Friday either confirming the event & location details or calling it off. If you received email’s & SMS last year, then you are on the data base still… if you are new here please email your email & phone number to admin<@>vicwavesailing.com.au (without the <>) and we will make sure to add you to the distribution list.

Judging:There will be 1 head judge per event that will be nominated before the event. The head judge will provide a specific judging criteria before the heats begin so all competitors are fully aware of how judging will be scored. 2 additional judges will be recruited on the day from other classes or spectators. All events will have 3 judges per event.
GuidelinesIntermediate DivisionThe emphasis of the intermediate division is on fun sailing, with everyone aiming to get out and catch some waves. With this in mind the judges are looking for:
- catching waves
- wave selection
- bottom and top turns
- linking together turns
We are wanting the intermediate division to work on building up their skills by catching good waves and working towards multiple top and bottom turns, showing an understanding of using the wave for power and not totally relying on the sail.
Open DivisionSailors in the open division should be competent at jumping and waveriding in the critical section of the wave.
The judges are looking for the following:
- Wavesailing
- wave selection eg. Bigger and longer waves score higher than short, small ones.
- speed and power eg. Amount of spray (or buckets)thrown from turns
- utilising the critical section of the wave eg. Staying in or close to the breaking section where the wave is at its most powerful as opposed to the whitewater or shoulder.
- advanced manoeuvres eg. Aerials and wave tricks, height and landing.
Jumps- height
- degree of difficulty eg. Straight air is less than a forward loop. Forward less than backloop etc.
- landing eg. Landed planing vs. landed in waterstart position.
The Open Division sailors should be rewarded for a 'go for it attitude'. Singular big or risky moves when landed should be scored higher than multiple safe moves.
