How to get there

Drive through Geelong and turn left to Torquay along the Surf Coast Hwy.  Drive into Torquay and turn left at the big round about onto Bell St.  Drive to the end of Bell St (past the caravan park) and turn right on to The Esplande.  Point Danger is just on the left.  There is a big carpark there with lots of rigging up area.  Can’t miss it!

Point Danger, Torquay

Surf Break Description

Point Danger is home to our one and only Jason Polakow.  Jasaon Polakow grew up at Point Danger and is where he mastered his skills to become 2x world wavesailing champion.  Point Danger is a fun starboard tack bump and jump wavesailing location.  It is more suited to backside riding on the big rollers that break on the outside reef.  When the swell is large, there is a small reef on the inside where you can get crank a few turns down the line.  Point Danger is a very good place to learn starboard tack jumping, very popular in a big south westerlies and a picturesque location to sail.

Wave Sailing Conditions Required

You can sail in most wind directions at Point Danger.  Point Danger is the commonly sailed location on the west coast.

  • Swell size and direction – The best is a big south westerly swell which is when the inside reef starts breaking.
  • Wind Direction – Mostly sailed anything from a SE to a SW. NW’s are dead off shore and no good because the elevated headland casts a big wind shadow.
  • Tide – Best on mid to high tide.  At low tide, the reef is exposed and this is where the waves break.

Launching

There are steps that lead down to the beach on the northern side of the point.  Launching is very easy because it is flat water with no shore break.

Dangers

The only real danger at Point Danger is if you unfortunately break equipment or yourself when sailing out the back.  Since it is mainly sailed in a south west, the wind will blow you away from the headland and onto main beach which is quite a long way away.  Windsurfers should also be careful sailing at low tide in the waves as it gets very shallow.

Overall

Point Danger is a very fun starboard tack bump and jump sailing location.  You are pretty much always guaranteed a sail if it is windy and the wind has some any south in it.  On the bigger swell days, the inside reef can be good fun to home your wavesailing skills on a very safe and manageable wave.
