How to Get There

Drive through Geelong and turn left to head to Torquay along the Surf Coast Hwy.  A couple of km’s before you hit Torquay, turn left at Blackgate Rd. At approximately 4km’s along Blackgate Rd, turn right at Point Impossible Rd and drive to the end of the gravel road where the there are  1st and 2nd reef wave breaks of point impossible.

Surf Break Description

Point Impossible has two right hand reef breaks.  1st reef is located right in front of the carpark and breaks along to the river mouth.  1st reef is a bit of a fat wave and is very popular mal spot and is not good for windsurfing as it is too protected from the wind.  2nd reef is a bit off shore and generally is a bit bigger than first reef and more exposed to the wind.  To get to 2nd reef, you have to walk over the sand dunes and sail off the beach.  When the swell and wind direction is right, Posso’s is probably one of Victoria’s best down the line wavesailing locations but typically the conditions are always fickle and the wavesailing time windows always seem to be small.  If you get it on a good day, it is truly awesome.

Wave Sailing Conditions Required

Point Impossible is most sailed during spring and winter when the winds are more westerly.

  • Swell Size and Direction – Posso’s needs a medium to large south westerly swell.  If Bells beach is larger than 4 foot, Posso’s will be on!
  • Wind Direction – Best wind direction is WSW.  For some reason, the wind is always a little too on shore or too offshore.  If it is offshore conditions, the wind gets very gusty and fickle.
  • Tide – Posso’s is best on a low to mid tide.  At high tide, Posso’s gets too full and fat.

Launching

Launching is not normally too much of a problem.  Unless Posso’s is massive, there is a large area of flat water until you get the waves which you can also easily sail around.  There are a few rocks around so just be a little careful if you end up coming in near the point.

Dangers

Posso’s is only dangerous when it is very big but is also when it is at it’s best.  On the big days, 2nd and 1st reef can sometimes join up making for some very long rides but can make getting out difficult as the wind is usually fickle and gusty.  Most of the time thou, Posso’s has very few dangers and is a really fun wavesailing spot when working.

Overall

Posso’s is the west coast’s best down the line windsurfing location.  It is absolutely awesome on it goods days but these can be a bit far and between as it is difficult to get the wind/swell and tide to agree all at the same time.  If you down that way, it is always worth a look.
