How to get thereHead along the South Gippsland Hwy to Phillip Island. Turn left at the Leongatha turn off (still South Gippsland Hwy, about 10km’s past Koo Wee Rup). Drive through Leongatha and follow the signs to Fish Creek. Once through Fish Creek, there is a turn off sign for Sandy Point or Waratah Bay.
Surf Break DescriptionSandy Point is famously known for Shallow Inlet which has incredibly flat water and very high winds which is very popular for speed sailing and beginners learning to jibe. On the ocean side, is Waratah bay which can produce some very fun wavesailing conditions. Waratah bay is a long sandy beach with fun beach breaks along its entire length. The waves are generally biggest at the Shallow Inlet end and progressively get smaller as you get closer and beyond the town. In summer time, if the region is in an easterly airstream, the south easterly seabreeze really cranks and is very reliable making for some excellent cross shore wavesailing conditions. Wavesailing Conditions RequiredSandy Point/Waratah Bay is a very fun wavesailing location for all levels of windsurfing. It works in a variety conditions and described below. - Swell Size and Direction – Sandy Point is a little bit protected and therefore needs a medium sized south westerly swell to get in there. Generally, if Phillip Island (woolami) is about 4 foot, Sandy Point will be around 2 foot.
- Wind Direction - Sandy Point is best in a south easterly. If Victoria is in a south easterly airstream, the seabreeze is super charged and can get up to 30 knots and is very reliable and consistent. Sandy Point is also a good option in a north westerly.
- Tide - Sandy Point can be sailed in all tides but generally the waves are bigger and better on a mid to high tide.
LaunchingLaunching is no problem at Sandy Point as there are no rocks and the waves are usually not very powerful. Depending on the wind direction, some people like to sail up shallow inlet, walk their windsurfing gear over the sand dunes and wavesail downwind to Sandy Point. The wind up that end is a little cleaner but is a bit of mission. The other launching spots is straight out the front of the general store, Ned’s Lookout, or further down at Waratah Bay. DangersSandy Point is a safe wavesailing location because the waves are not very powerful and there are no reefs/rocks to look out for. It is a very good first time wavesailing location. OverallSandy Point is a great place for summer time wavesailing and is a lovely little quiet town. The other great feature with Sandy Point is that if there is no waves, it has the flat water option of Shallow Inlet which is a experience in itself by sailing on dead flat water. You can also guarantee the wind will blow if Victoria is in a south easterly airstream and it is sunny. Sandy Point is also the location of the Melbourne Cup Windsurfing Weekend hosted by SHQ which is very popular.
